Christine\u00a0came in at the end of breakfast\u00a0looking rather sulky. \u201cNobody is going to tell me what to\u00a0do!\u201d she declared, \u201cI\u2019ll do what I like!\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u00a0 family sat there taken aback at this outburst. After all, Father\u00a0had only\u00a0said it would be a good idea for everyone to eat their breakfast together\u00a0before going off to work. \u00a0 Christine may have been only boarding there, but she knew what was expected of \u00a0 her.<\/p>\n

This is\u00a0just like Cain that we read about in the Bible. Cain was the\u00a0 eldest son of Adam and Eve. He\u00a0had been\u00a0brought up knowing the story of the Garden of Eden and how his parents had \u00a0 disobeyed God.\u00a0He knew\u00a0that disobedience had planted the seeds of death in every person born since\u00a0then, including himself.<\/p>\n

Cain knew very well what sort of sacrifice God\u00a0 wanted. He had been told many times that\u00a0sin\u00a0brings\u00a0death, and that a lamb had to be killed as a sacrifice.\u00a0But Cain was rebellious. He didn\u2019t like\u00a0animals; his forte was gardening. So he brought his best\u00a0vegetables\u00a0and fruit . Surely this would please God! Yes, he wanted\u00a0 to offer God a sacrifice, but he was\u00a0going to\u00a0do it his<\/b> way. No-one was going to \u00a0 tell\u00a0 him any different!<\/p>\n

But Abel who\u00a0loved his flock, was\u00a0prepared\u00a0to offer one of his best lambs as his sacrifice.\u00a0It was a beautiful little lamb and Abel wanted to give God his very best. The Bible\u00a0tells us that God was pleased with Abel\u2019s sacrifice, but he was not pleased \u00a0 with Cain\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Somehow \u00a0 the boys knew God\u2019s feelings in this matter, and Cain was very sulky. Why was\u00a0 God not\u00a0pleased\u00a0with his sacrifice?\u00a0 His vegetables\u00a0 were just as good as Abel\u2019s lamb, they were beautiful!<\/p>\n

But\u00a0Cain had clean\u00a0missed the point. Later in the Bible, we are told that to obey God is better\u00a0 than all the\u00a0sacrifices\u00a0offered our way!<\/p>\n

You can read about these things in the Bible in Genesis 4:1-7; 1 Samuel\u00a0 15:22-23<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
