\"PETEE015\"<\/a>\u00a0 Uncle Jeff came into the room where Sarah was curled up on the couch reading.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, hullo Uncle Jeff\u201d said Sarah uncurling herself, \u201cwhere have you come from?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve just been out fishing\u201d, said Uncle Jeff, \u201cAnd I\u2019ve brought some fish for your mother. And what are you reading there?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a book that our Youth Pastor gave us all to read,\u201d Sarah said, \u201cBut it\u2019s a bit hard to understand. Or per\u2019aps I\u2019d better say, it would be awfully hard to do!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, tell me about it\u201d, said Uncle Jeff, \u201cAnd we\u2019ll see if we can sort it out for you a bit better\u2026.tell me what the hard bits are\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell\u201d, said Sarah, \u201cIt\u2019s all about the things that Jesus said when He was here on earth, and it\u2019s starting off with what is called \u2018The Sermon on the Mount\u2019. The first one says, \u2018You are happy\u00a0 if you are poor\u2019. I don\u2019t think I\u2019d be happy if I was poor!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, the first thing we have to understand is that the word \u2018happy\u2019 here really means that things will work out for the best\u201d, said Uncle Jeff, \u201cand that if we are poor it is referring to realising that we are not good enough to face God\u00a0 without confessing our sins to Him first. People who think they are good enough on their own to be in God\u2019s kingdom can never get there. It is only through what the Lord Jesus did for us\u2026.He said He is the way you know\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I remember that verse\u201d, Sarah said. \u201cWell, what about the next part when it says you are happy when you are hungry? All I think about when I\u2019m hungry is what I\u2019m having for dinner!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, but see that it says that if you are hungry you will be filled, and that is referring to spiritual food, not food on the table!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I see,\u201d said Sarah, \u201cThat means when we read the Bible we will feel satisfied inside. But you know Uncle Jeff, I sometimes think I never remember anything I read!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it\u2019s like this,\u201d Uncle Jeff said, \u201cWhen you put a sieve under the tap, it doesn\u2019t hold any water, but it does stay clean! So even if you don\u2019t remember much, reading the Bible helps your thoughts to stay clean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, what about the next part that says you are happy when you weep? How does that make sense?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis simply means that unless we weep over the bad things we have done, we will never ask God\u2019s forgiveness for them. It is only when we do this that we will be truly happy deep down inside us\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s right\u201d Sarah said, \u201cI can remember when I did that, it felt like a big burden was lifted off my back, and I felt so happy\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s great\u201d, said Uncle Jeff, \u201cDoes that help you to understand what your book was getting at now?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it helps me see that it DOES make sense after all\u201d, Sarah said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, how about we go and make a start on cleaning that fish for tea then\u201d, Uncle Jeff said, \u201cAnd we can leave any other questions until afterwards!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
