\u201cOh, it\u2019s too hard!\u201d Sarah cried out in disgust, and threw her study book down. Uncle Jeff was there having a cup of tea with the grown-ups in the other room, and he came in just in time to hear Sarah say this. \u201cIs that your study\u00a0 for this week Sarah?\u201d he asked, \u201cWhat is it about, that you think is too hard?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Well, it’s that part that talks about doing what God wants us to do, and then we find we can\u2019t manage it\u201d, Sarah said, \u201cAnd that\u2019s exactly what I\u2019m finding! I tell God I\u2019m sorry for the mean things I\u2019ve done and said, and promise I won\u2019t do it again, and then by the time next week comes, I\u2019m right back to square one!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat sort of things do you want to do, Sarah?\u201d Uncle Jeff asked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWell, I want to do what God wants me to, but when someone does something mean to me then I fly off at them, and I know that\u2019s not right and not pleasing God\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Well, you know\u201d, Uncle Jeff said thoughtfully, \u201cI used to be like that too. I always desperately wanted to do what God wanted me to and then I would fail and feel miserable. But one day I realised that I was putting things the wrong way around. I saw that it didn\u2019t depend on me doing anything at all!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cReally?\u201d said Sarah, \u201cWell, what DOES it depend on then?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI heard a preacher that said it is three \u201cD\u201ds \u2026we have to DEPEND on God, DIE to\u00a0\u00a0 ourselves, and do it DAILY, and I realised that it isn\u2019t what I do, it is what God does for me!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cReally?\u201d Sarah said again, \u201cWhat exactly does all that mean Uncle Jeff?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not a question of US hanging onto God, it\u2019s a question of us letting God hang onto us. It is HIS work IN us, not our work FOR Him that matters.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Does that mean we don\u2019t do anything then?\u201d asked Bobby who had been sitting there quietly all through this conversation and suddenly piped up, \u201cThat\u2019s good, then I don\u2019t have to try to be good!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not quite like that\u201d, Uncle Jeff said, \u201cIt means we have to ask God to help us because we can\u2019t do it ourselves, and we have to ask that every day!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Oh, I see what you mean\u201d, Sarah said, \u201cIt means that we die to things we want to do, and then depend on God to help us do this every single day!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes\u201d, said Bobby with a grin, \u201cThat means you don\u2019t grumble about doing the dishes and other things when Mum asks you to help!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Mmm yes,\u201d said Sarah slowly, \u201cAnd it isn\u2019t going to be easy either but I\u2019ll try my best!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
