I live on the outskirts of Whangarei, the northernmost city in New Zealand. I enjoy many things, ( writing amongst them), have been married to Keith for sixty-one years, have three married daughters, nine grandchildren and seventeen great- grandchildren who are scattered in various countries. No cats and no dogs as they would cramp our life-style.. We are obviously retired, but were farming further north before moving to the town over thirty-five years ago. We attend one of the local churches across the same side of town that we live.

What is Easter About?

LILY It was Easter Sunday at lunch time, and all the family were gathered around the dinner table. Mum had made everyone’s favourite meal of roast lamb with peas, potatoes and carrots, and they were sitting around talking, letting the first course settle down before the pudding came.

Uncle Jeff was there too as he often was, and he said, “Well Bobby, what did the preacher tell us about in church this morning?”

“I know,” said Betty without waiting to see what Bobby said, “It was about Jesus dying on the cross.”

“Very good, it was too,” said Uncle Jeff, “What else can you remember?”

“He used some big words all starting with the letter ‘v’ ” Bobby said, “One word was violent, and he said that meant that Jesus had some horrid things done to Him before He was put on the cross.”

“That’s right”, Uncle Jeff said, “What were some of those violent things that were done to Him?”

“He was whipped”, Bobby said.

“He had a crown of thorns with long spikes on it jammed onto His head”, said Sarah, “and the blood all ran down His face.”

“Yes, that’s right. What was another ‘v’ word then?” asked Uncle Jeff.

“He said it was a vicious death”, said Sarah, “and that means that they were really trying to hurt Him a lot.”

“They hated Him,” piped up Betty.

“They did too”, said Dad who was listening to all this, “They were really vindictive the way they treated Him. That means that they were trying to be as mean to Him as they could be because they hadn’t liked what He was saying about being God’s special Sent One.”

“Just like Emma was mean to me,” Betty said, “when she hit me the other day for nothing!”

“What was another ‘v’ word?” Uncle Jeff asked, “Those are three ‘v’ words about how the people were treating the Lord Jesus. What was another word that shows us how He felt?”

There was silence for a moment while everyone stopped to think.

“I know,” said Sarah, “It was voluntary. That means that He did it because He wanted to help people.”

“Oooh,” said Betty, “How could Him being hurt so badly help people?”

“It was something to do with Him paying for our sins wasn’t it?” asked Sarah.

“Yes,” said Uncle Jeff, “That was part of it. He did it because He wanted to, no-one was making Him do it.”

“I remember another word,” Bobby said, “He said it was valid for today. What exactly does that mean?”

“That means that what He did all those years ago on the cross still counts for today,” Uncle Jeff said.

“I remember another one,” Betty said, “He said it was val…valable. What does that mean?”

“You mean valuable,” Sarah said, “That means that it was worth a lot then and even  for us today.”

“Yes, that’s right”, said Dad, “We wouldn’t be able to pray to God at all if Jesus hadn’t died on the cross for us.”

“I’m so glad He did,” said Betty with a sigh, “I like praying to God when things go wrong. It just seems to make things better straight away.”

“Well, are you all ready for your pudding?” Mum called out from the kitchen, “Sarah, come and help carry it in! I’m so glad you were all listening so well to the sermon this morning! The main thing now is to remember it!”

My Heart, God’s Home Part Four

FamilyThe Dining Room

From there I took my Guest into the dining room. the room of appetites and desires. I spent a lot of time and hard work here trying to satisfy my wants. I was sure that Jesus would find plenty here to entice Him.

I said to Him, “This is a favorite room. I am quite sure You will be pleased with what we serve.’

He seated Himself at the table with me and asked, “What is on the menu for dinner?” “Well,” I said, “my favorite dishes: money, academic degrees and stocks, with newspaper articles of fame and fortune as side dishes.” These were the things I liked – secular fare.

When the food was placed before Him, He said nothing, but I observed that He did not eat it. I said to Him, “Master, don’t You care for this food? What is the trouble?”

He answered, “I have food to eat that you do not know of…..if you want food that really satisfies you, do the will of the Father. Stop seeking your own pleasures, desires, and satisfaction. Seek to please Him. That food will satisfy you.”

There at the table He gave me a taste of the joy of doing God’s will. What flavour! There is no food like it in all the world. It alone satisfies. I can’t start or finish a day without it.

My Heart, God’s Home (Part 3)

WPCThe Study…….The first room was the study (the library). This room of the mind is a very small room with very thick walls. But it is a very important room. In a sense, it is the control room of the house….what we think about is what we become!

Christ entered with me and looked around at the books in the bookcase, the magazines upon the table, the pictures on the walls. As I followed His gaze I became uncomfortable. Strangely, I hadn’t felt self-conscious about this before, but now that He was there looking at these things I was embarrassed. Some books were there that His eyes were too pure to behold. On the table were a few magazines that a Christian had no business reading. As for the pictures on the walls – the imaginations and thoughts of the mind – some of these were shameful.

Red-faced, I turned to Him and said, “Master, I know that this room needs to be cleaned up and made over. Will You help me make it what it ought to be?”

“Certainly!” He said. “I’m glad to help you. First of all, take all the things that you are reading and looking at which are not helpful, pure, good and true, and throw them out! Now put on the empty shelves the books of the Bible. Fill the library with Scripture and meditate on it day and night. Get some biographies of godly men and women and read how I was able to work through them. As for the pictures on the walls, you will have difficulty controlling these images, but I have something that will help.”

He gave me a full-size portrait of Himself. “Hang this centrally on the wall of your mind.”

I did, and I have discovered through the years that when my thoughts are centered upon Christ Himself,  His purity and power cause impure thoughts to back away. So He has helped me to bring my thoughts under His control. As I remember that it was His blood that cleanses me from all sin, so these unclean thoughts disappear.

My Heart, God’s Home, Part two

The Living Room……

Livinig RoomFrom the front door, we walked into the living room. This room was cosy and comfortable. I liked it. It had a fireplace, comfortable chairs, a sofa, and a quiet atmosphere.

He said, “This is indeed a delightful room. Let us come here often. It is secluded and quiet, and we can fellowship together”

Well, as a young Christian I was thrilled. I couldn’t think of anything I would rather do than have a few minutes with Christ in close companionship.

He promised, “I will be here early every morning. Meet me here, and we will start the day together.”

So morning after morning, I would come downstairs to the living room. He would take a book of the Bible from the case, We would open it and read together. He would unfold to me the wonder of God’s saving truths. My heart sang as He shared the love and the grace He had toward me. These were wonderful times.

However, little by little, this time began to be shortened. I had too much to do. Urgent matters would crowd out the quiet times of conversation with Jesus.

I remember one morning rushing downstairs, eager to be on my way. I passed the living room and noticed that the door was open.

Looking in, I saw a fire in the fireplace and Jesus was sifting there. Suddenly in dismay I thought to myself,  “He is my guest. I invited Him into my heart! He has come as my Saviour and Friend, and yet I am neglecting Him.”

I stopped, turned and hesitantly went in, With downcast glance, I said, “Master, forgive me. Have You been here all these mornings?”

“Yes,” He said, “I told you I would be here every morning to meet with you. Remember, I love you. I have redeemed you at great cost, I value your fellowship. Even if you cannot keep the quiet time for your own sake, do it for mine,”

The truth that Christ desires my companionship, that He wants me to be with Him and waits for me, has done more to transform my quiet time with God than any other single fact. Don’t let Christ wait alone in the living room of your heart, but every day find time when, with your Bible and in prayer, you may be together with Him.

My Heart, God’s Home ….Part One

The original text was by Robert Boyd Munger, but it has been added   to and is hopefully helpful and thought provoking…. we will be going through room by room in the next few weeks and see what we can learn from this parable!

Foreword

“If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”  (John 14:23, NIV)

HeartOne evening I opened the door of my heart to Jesus Christ. What an entrance He made! It was a very real experience, and the weight of my sin rolled off my shoulders as He came in. Something had happened at the very centre of my life.   He had been knocking on the door of my heart for some time, and I had been deliberately resisting His knock. How thankful I am that He persisted and kept knocking!

He kept saying, “Look I’m knocking on your door! if any  one hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will eat with him, and he with me.” (Rev 3:20)

He took my load from me, and as He came into the darkness of my heart, He turned on the light; He built a fire on the hearth and banished the chill. He started music where there had been stillness, and He filled the emptiness with His own loving, wonderful fellowship. In the joy of this new relationship I said to Jesus Christ, “Lord, I want this heart of mine, this house of mine,  to be Yours. I  want to have You settle down here and be perfectly at home. Everything I  have belongs to You”.

I was never more sure of anything else in my young life and I have never doubted that He came in  then to stay. I have never regretted that decision and I never will.

It proved to be many years before I was willing to let Him be truly Master and Lord of everything in my house! But at the beginning I couldn’t wait to show Him around!

Truth in a Nutshell.

BIBLE2             There seem to be so many people these days  contracting that dread “C” disease….cancer. A young friend had a brain tumour towards the end of last year and it was only a matter of weeks before he went to be with the Lord. His funeral service was a triumphant testimony to the fact that he knew where he was going, and that all his family knew where he was at that very time…he was rejoicing with his Lord who he had endeavoured to serve in his short time on earth.

Another friend visited a neighbour of his recently who only had a very short time to live. Our friend tried to talk to him about the Lord, but only met with a blank refusal to listen. “I don’t believe that rubbish”, the man said, “when we die we just disappear into the cosmos”.

“Would you like me to get my pastor to come and talk to you?” our friend persisted.

“No, I wouldn’t”, the man said, “I’d be very angry if you did that!” he said definitely and the conversation finished abruptly.

What a sad state of affairs to go into eternity with! It reminded me of this parable that  came through my mail box not so long ago, and is worth passing on again…

Parable of the Unborn Twins.

Wonder if there’s life after birth?              Of course not! Whoever heard of such a thing!

But what if there is? What would it be like?  No one’s ever come back to tell us!

I wonder what it would be like to be free?   At least we know what it’s like here.

Would there be light and food we could eat?  Rubbish! We are adequately fed by the umbilical cord!

Don’t you want to meet Mother?      Mother?       Whoever heard of a mother?

But we can sometimes hear her voice as she talks and sings from up there….

Rubbish! It’s all imagination!

Well, I’d like to meet her and have her hold me in her arms! It would be all light and freedom then!

You do talk a lot of nonsense! I’m going to turn over….ooh, it’s getting awfully tight in here!

Well, I don’t care what you say. If you are right and I’m wrong, we’ve got nothing to lose. But if I’m right and you’re wrong, then there is everything to lose, and I’m positive I’m right!

Can’t we just hear the truth in this parable! People say there is no life after death, no-one has ever come back to tell us, that there is nothing to be set free from and there is no such thing as “God”. As for His Word, the Bible, it is all just imagination, a collection of fairy tales! We think our ideas are the truth of the matter, but what if we WERE wrong? What then? There is everything to lose then, so it pays to search these things out and see what the truth is. God says, “My Word is Truth”; Jesus Christ said, “I am the way, the truth and the life”. Let’s look into these things for ourselves, and then make our decision!

Do You Really Listen?

                                                       Luke 8: 10-18

PECHI092How much do we REALLY listen when people are talking to us? Or when the preacher is speaking at church? Sarah had the same problem……

“This is awfully hard to understand”, said Sarah one Saturday afternoon  while her mother was getting tea ready.

“How do you mean?” asked Mum.

“Well, our lesson for this week is about listening, and how to not lose what we’ve been given”.

“It sounds like a bit of a puzzle”, Mum said, only half listening. “Why don’t you ask Uncle Jeff tonight when he comes round for tea?”

“Oh, that’s a good idea” said Sarah, “Is he coming round then?”

“Yes”, said Mum, “Didn’t you hear me telling you all this morning that he was coming?”

“Well, I was busy texting Emma and didn’t hear what you were saying!” Sarah said.

Mum smiled. She thought that Uncle Jeff would be able to explain very easily what Sarah wanted to know.

After tea was over and everyone was settled down for the evening, Uncle Jeff came over to where Sarah was curled up on the couch in her favourite position.

“Well Sarah,” he said, “What is your lesson for tomorrow about?”

“Oh Uncle Jeff”, Sarah said, “I was going to ask you about that! It’s from Luke chapter eight and it’s about listening. It’s the sower’s parable, and it keeps saying to hear what is being explained. Then later on, it says that we have to be careful we don’t lose what we’ve been given. What’s that all about?”

“Well”, said Uncle Jeff, “We have to remember that Jesus was explaining about the seed that was sown and the crop that came from it. That is about all that we remember about that story. But Jesus was actually saying a lot more than that. Let’s look at those verses and see what He was really saying. What does verse ten say?”

Sarah read it slowly. “It says that He was explaining it to the disciples so that they could understand it”.

“That’s right”, said Uncle Jeff, “What does verse twelve say?”

“It says that the first lot of people hear God’s Word, and then the Devil comes along and takes it away. I suppose that means that it goes in one ear and out the other”.

“Yes, that is exactly what it is saying”, Uncle Jeff said, “What does verse thirteen say about hearing?”

“It says that the next lot of people that hear God’s Word think it’s a great idea but it doesn’t last. It’s like sleeping on a good idea and seeing what you think the next morning  and then changing your mind about it I s’pose”.

“You’re getting the picture Sarah,” said Uncle Jeff. “What do you see about the next lot of people who hear God’s Word?”

“It seems as though they get too busy with work or things like sport to be able to fit church in”, Sarah said.

“That’s exactly right Sarah. We’ve seen all the people now who heard God’s Word but they never did anything much about it”, Uncle Jeff said, “So what conclusion do you come to about these people?”

“I s’pose it means that they should have listened and then done something about it” Sarah said slowly, “Is that how that verse about losing what we’ve been given ties in with all this?”

“What do you think Sarah?” Uncle Jeff asked, “Let’s look at verse fifteen and see what it says. What do the people who grow a good crop do about listening?”

Sarah read it through and then said, “It says that when they really HEAR what God is saying, they KEEP it, and then DO it! “

“Now read verse eighteen and tell me what you see there”, Uncle Jeff said.

Sarah read it and then said, “That’s what was puzzling me before!  But now I can see that people who hear what the Bible says and do it will get a lot more blessings, while those who only half listen won’t do what it says and after a bit they’ll think it’s not worth bothering with any more. They’ve lost it!”

“Good girl!” said Uncle Jeff, “I’ll give you top marks for that! Now you’ll be able to explain it to the others tomorrow”.

Doing God’s Work.

Man TalkingWe heard recently of an itinerant preacher who had been moving around among churches teaching that simply to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Bible teaches, is not enough for a person to become a Christian. The part of the verse that was quoted as teaching this, says…. “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Philippians 2:12-13) The next verse goes on to say that “it is GOD who works in you to do His good pleasure”, so we can see from this that the works referred to are nothing to do with what we can do, but what God chooses to do through us!

The man telling us this story had worked with building fibreglass boats for many years, and he pointed out that when working with fibreglass, it will stay ready to use in its container while it is untouched, for many months. To make it work, it must  have a catalyst added to it, and then it begins to do its job. In the same way, a person who repents of his sin, receives the Holy Spirit and then can begin to work for the Lord.

But if we slip up and go back into our old ways, we grieve the Holy Spirit , and He then cannot do His work through us….it is as though a neutralizer has been added to the mix and the fibreglass mixture is good for nothing.

In our lives it is the times when we miss our daily Bible reading and get too busy to go to church, that we get cold in heart and we become good for nothing as far as our work for the Lord goes. God cannot use someone who is too busy to keep in touch with Him. It is HIS work that counts, not ours! Let’s take this as our challenge for this month and sort ourselves out!
